About Us

eleXsys Energy is the inventor and manufacturer of an award-winning solution to the voltage problem caused by clean energy producers trying to send energy back to electricity grids.

Founded in Australia in 2012, the company started to develop all aspects of hardware and software for eleXsys in 2015 and manufactured the first prototype. Commercialisation commenced in 2020 with the integration of our technology solution into a ground-breaking microgrid project with global retail giant IKEA.

After identifying many other immediate opportunities to apply eleXsys to projects around the world, we began to establish an international presence, opening offices in Singapore, London, New York and San Francisco to complement our growing Australian operations.

In 2019, the eleXsys technology won the “Smart Grids and Security” category of the Start Up Energy Transition Awards in Berlin, hosted by the German Energy Agency (Dena) and the World Energy Council (WEC).

Awareness of eleXsys Energy continues to escalate, attracting new interest, accolades and investment. At the same time, our research and development efforts are finding more and more applications for the technology with the majority of our engineers now working on R&D projects.

These applications will enable a wide range of renewable energy systems, leading to less reliance on the grid. From a single household consumer or small township going off the grid, to large industrial buildings becoming urban solar power plants, eleXsys will put distributed energy resources to work like never before.

Without innovative green energy solutions like eleXsys, the world will simply not be able to achieve the immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions needed to limit climate change.

Our Commitment

At eleXsys Energy we take climate change seriously – very seriously. The latest findings released in the International Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report are a clarion call for all of us to re-double efforts to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gases and take determined action to meet Net Zero emissions targets by 2050, if not sooner.

As a company that develops innovative technologies to increase the production of clean energy and displace fossil fuel intensive electricity generation, we understand the importance of evidence-based research to underpin and support our solutions.

eleXsys Energy exists to make a real contribution to global efforts to reverse the current trajectory of increasing temperatures and the impacts from more severe natural disasters that will impact communities in the developed and, in particular, developing nations.

The commitment we make to our investors, employees, customers and partners is to do all we can to support global efforts to provide a sustainable future for our planet. This commitment is made without conditions and guides us every day as we work to support the transition to a clean energy future.

“I am very excited to be part of such an innovative and ambitious company. Together we will make a huge impact on the fight against climate change and achieve great things for a better world.”

Boyuan also supports the development of C&I microgrid applications that integrate the company’s unique eleXsys technology solution.

Our History

The original idea for eleXsys dates back to around 2006 when a senior utility engineer working for one of Australia’s major electricity distributors, now eleXsys Energy CEO Bevan Holcombe, started to look more closely at the effects of concentrated rooftop solar on the grid.

Australia’s ‘Sunshine State’ of Queensland was already experiencing a steady increase in household renewable energy systems, when a generous feed-in tariff scheme was introduced by the State Government as a means to provide cheaper clean energy for residents during a period of skyrocketing electricity prices. The scheme meant residences and small businesses that installed solar photovoltaic (PV) systems of up to 30 kilowatts could receive 44 cents per kilowatt-hour (c/kWh) for excess energy exported back to the electricity grid.

The Australian Government also weighed in, offering a rebate incentive to encourage the take up of household solar panels.

A rapid acceleration in grid-connected solar PV followed with many thousands of homeowners rushing to install their own systems to reduce electricity bills, earn money from the grid and play a part in renewable energy.

At the same time, Bevan and his colleagues were looking into the likely effect of increased rooftop solar on the network with forecasts predicting an incredible 80% of future energy generation in the south east Queensland region could come from this renewable source. However, they were also increasingly concerned about the impact this growing source might have on network stability and what, if any, voltage management equipment could resolve the problem.

Network Voltage Issues

The predicted voltage rise followed and soon started to compromise the electricity distributor’s ability to meet its statutory obligation to maintain a consistent voltage for all customers. By 2012, the Queensland Government had slashed the feed-in tariff for new residential PV systems and reduced the eligibility to 5 kilowatts. More changes followed, including rules to prevent customers on the premium tariff to use battery storage to feed power into the grid.

Other Australian states such as South Australia and Western Australia were now also experiencing their own voltage management issues. In 2019, the Australian Energy Market Operator warned that if nothing was done to safeguard the grid, there was a real risk of rolling blackouts if soaring levels of renewable energy overwhelmed the system.

Measures were introduced to prevent network voltages reaching excessively high levels, such as imposing a 15% rule to limit the export of solar to the grid and design changes to PV systems requiring them reduce or switch off solar generation output when network statutory voltage limits are reached.

eleXsys Development Commences

By the time Bevan’s prediction about network voltage problems came true, he had already left his electricity distributor job and had commenced early development of the eleXsys solution.

The lack of any existing commercial product that could singlehandedly solve the problem meant eleXsys had to start from scratch, creating both the hardware and software in the perfect combination while keeping pace with the dramatic change and growth taking place in the renewables sector.

The first eleXsys prototype was completed in 2015, followed by thousands of hours of R&D and rigorous testing. Development continued in earnest, backed by a growing team, government funding grants and a realisation that eleXsys could support a multitude of applications across all renewable energy sources.

Global Expansion

By 2020, the full commercialisation of eleXsys was under way in the wake of winning the “Smart Grids and Security” category of the 2019 World Energy Council start-up awards.

Construction of the IKEA eleXsys Microgrid project in South Australia had begun, together with enhancements to our Australian manufacturing capabilities and significant ongoing research and development activity.

eleXsys Energy establish offices in the USA, Europe and the Asia Pacific, and new partnerships to enable rapid global expansion. An international investment banking and financial services company was engaged to assist with capital raising and more award wins were achieved.

In July 2021, eleXsys appointed Non-Executive Chairman Angelo Sofocleous to the board, joining an expanding team of Australian and international executives and Advisory Board members.
